What to Expect When Donating
Congratulations on your decision to help save lives! Donating blood is a safe and simple process and each donation may save as many as three patients. We believe the best donor is an informed donor, which is why we suggest you read over the following information. Donor usually feel less apprehensive about the donation process if they know exactly what is going to happen to you at the blood drive. In addition, you are more likely to have a pleasant and easier experience if you follow our "before-donating" advice
Blood donors must be:
- At least 17 years old.
- Weigh a minimum of 110 pounds.
- In general good health.
Before giving blood:
- Be sure to get a good night's sleep.
- Eat a hearty meal and drink plenty of fluids.
- Wear comfortable clothes (sleeves that can be pushed or rolled up above the elbow)
Bring with you:
- Positive Identification (Preferably a Red Cross donor card, but if you do not have one, a picture ID is OK.)
- The name of any prescription medicine you have taken in the last month.
When you donate blood, trained Red Cross staff will:
- Take your temperature, pulse, blood pressure and a drop of blood from your fingertip (to make sure you have enough iron to safely donate).
- Ask you some important questions regarding your past and present health. This information is asked to be sure your donation experience will be safe for you and the patient who receives your blood, and answers will be kept confidential.
When you are ready to give blood, trained Red Cross staff will:
- Cleanse your arm with an iodine solution to kill any germs.
- Then insert the needle. A slight pinch will be felt and your arm may sting from the anticoagulant in the blood bag tube for a few seconds, and then you will feel no pain at all. The actual donation only takes 8 to 10 minutes.
When you are finished donating:
- You get to enjoy refreshments at our donor diner.
- Continue to drink extra liquids and avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activity for four to five hours after leaving.
- Remember to schedule your next blood donation appointment. You can safely donate every 56 days.
