Media Center End the year with one last good deed – Give blood December 29, 2008 COLUMBUS, Ohio – During the holidays, family and friends come together to share traditions and the joy of the season. As you gather with loved ones, the American Red Cross asks eligible individuals to remember to share the gift of life with those in need this holiday season by giving blood. “During this busy time of year, it’s so important to make the time to give blood,” said Rodney Wilson, communications manager of the local American Red Cross Blood Services Region. “Of all the gifts you give this season, no gift will mean as much as the gift of life.” Every two seconds someone in America needs a blood transfusion. Accidents victims, premature babies, or those being treated for cancers or blood disorders could all require blood transfusions. Your gift of life could make all the difference. “It’s important that people take the time to donate blood this holiday season to help ensure a stable blood supply,” said Wilson. “We rely on generous blood donors to help those in need.” Already the Red Cross has seen a significant drop in the number of people giving blood, and the local supply is nearly 400 donations short from what is needed. Donors of all types are needed before January to boost the supply. Ohio resident Linda is alive and able to be a mommy to son Paul thanks to blood donors. She nearly died after serious complications from giving birth to Paul. Those willing to give blood made sure Paul would have a mother to watch him grow up. Give the gift that costs nothing, but means everything. Please give blood. Extra incentive to give: Those who come to give blood in December can enter to win weekly drawings for $100 gas cards or a $2,000 AAA vacation giveaway! 11/08AP902
